After Intravenous Sedation or General Anesthesia

  • YOU MUST be accompanied home by a responsible adult (by car or taxi, NOT by public transportation). 
  • YOU MUST have a responsible adult stay with you for 24 hours following your anesthetic.
  • YOU MUST remain resting at home for the remainder of the surgical day.
  • If you feel dizzy YOU MUST immediately lie flat until the dizziness is gone. Rise slowly from lying down. Rising too fast may cause you to feel faint. You should be accompanied to the washroom.
  • YOU MUST NOT leave home or attend parties in your own home on the evening of your anesthetic.
  • YOU MUST NOT operate or be responsible for any motor vehicle, boat, machinery, power tools, firearms, weapons, or explosive materials for 24 hours following your anesthetic.
  • YOU MUST NOT operate or be responsible for any aircraft for 4 days following your anesthetic.
  • YOU MUST NOT engage in any activity where you could harm yourself or others for 24 hours following your anesthetic.
  • YOU MUST NOT enter into legal contracts or agreements, or sign any legal documents for 24 hours following your anesthetic.
  • YOU MUST NOT consume any alcohol for at least 1 week following your anesthetic.
  • YOU MUST NOT take any drugs affecting the nervous system or altering mood for 48 hours following your anesthetic (unless prescribed or agreed to by your surgeon or the anesthetist).
  • YOU MAY experience a sore throat or have back, chest, and abdominal discomfort following a general anesthetic. These symptoms are usually not serious and should disappear in a few days.
