Before Intravenous Sedation or General Anesthesia

  • If you are coming from far away out of town, an overnight stay within the city may be required.
  • Patients older than 12 years old MUST NOT have anything to eat or drink (including water) for eight (8) hours prior to the appointment. If the patient is under 12 years old (40kg) contact our office for instructions.
  • If you take routine oral medication, ask the treatment coordinator prior to your surgery date for instructions.
  • NO alcohol or smoking for at least 24 hours prior to surgery.
  • A parent or legal guardian MUST accompany minors under the age of 18 to provide consent.
  • A responsible adult MUST accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive the patient home. If your transportation is not available when you are ready to be discharged, there may be additional charges (which may not be covered by your insurance company). We cannot allow patients to leave by car, taxi or other transportation without a responsible adult escort.
  • You must not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia.
  • A responsible adult MUST remain with the patient for 12 – 24 hours after arriving home from surgery.
  • Wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes. Female patients should wear pants.
  • Contact lenses, jewelry, piercings, and dentures MUST be removed prior to surgery.
  • Do NOT wear lipstick, excessive makeup, false eyelashes, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  • Please notify the office if you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, cough, stomach or bowel upset.
  • If you use any type of inhaler (for asthma, COPD, etc), please bring all your inhalers to your appointment.
  • If you are diabetic, contact your treatment coordinator for instructions. Bring your insulin and glucometer.
  • If you are on blood thinners, contact your treatment coordinator for instructions.
  • If there is any question that you may be pregnant, please make the office aware prior to surgery.
  • Breast-feeding mothers may express breasts on the day prior to surgery. Breastfeeding can be resumed again 8 – 12 hours after discharge.
  • Please arrive approximately 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. This time is reserved specifically for you. We make every effort be on time with our schedule, and we understand that waiting is a nuisance. Emergency patients often require our immediate attention. We appreciate your patience in accommodating any unforeseen delays. Ultimately, you will receive our full attention.
  • Your surgical appointment will be confirmed at least 48 hours in advance. If we are unable to contact you at that time, or you do not contact the office to confirm your surgery, it will be cancelled and a rescheduling fee will be required. This fee is also applicable if you fail to keep your confirmed surgical appointment.
  • FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE PRECEDING INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN POSTPONEMENT OR CANCELLATION OF YOUR SURGERY
